In August 2006, the 28th Session of the International
Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE 28) will
take place at Umeå University,
Sweden. The conference theme, Technologies of the Word: Literacies in
the History of Education, will hopefully attract
the interest of
scholars of various disciplines from all over the world. The theme
addresses a multitude of aspects of
orality, reading, writing and computing, including many important
transitions and transformations. In a globalising world displaying new
literacies and illiteracies, the conference aims at contributing to a
better understanding not only of the past, but also of contemporary
society.
The
conference will take place on the scenic
campus of Umeå University. Currently celebrating
its 40th anniversary, the university with its 28,000 students has become
a vehicle of cultural and economic development in the city of Umeå and
its vicinity. Conveniently accessible by air, the expanding city of Umeå
has retained its small-town character, offering wooden houses, birch
trees and riverside
paths in addition to
many modern hotels,
restaurants and pubs – with
the region of indigenous
Saami culture not far away.
The
conference is co-hosted by the Department of Historical Studies and the
Teacher Education Faculty at Umeå University. The Organisational
Committee and the Programme Committee invite you all to help us make
ISCHE 28 a memorable event.
Welcome to Umeå University and ISCHE 28 in August 2006!
Daniel Lindmark
President of the ISCHE 28 Organisational and Programme Committees
