Umeå
Umeå (pronounced: OOH! ME! OH!) is the largest town in the North of Sweden. For more information about the city and its surroundings, visit the websites of Umeå Tourist Office or of Umeå municipality. Get a map of the city of Umeåwith the University campus, the airport and other relevant Conference sites marked.

Conference Venue
The Conference will be held at the Campus of Umeå University, in the Arts Building. The Campus is situated approximately 3 km from the airport as well as the town centre. The Campus is easily reached by local buses. Airport buses also stop near the Campus. For more information about Umeå University, including maps and slideshows. Registration
Thanks to our sponsors there will be no registration fee. The registration includes attendance to all sessions, the welcome reception and refreshments during the breaks. Lunches and conference dinner are not included. We recommend the delegates to pre-order a lunch package as most restaurants at campus will be closed at this time of the year. The secretariat will be in the Arts Building.

RCHS and ISA memberships
Participants should be members of the Research Committee on the History of Sociology (RCHS). It is also encouraged that participants join the International Sociological Association (ISA). These memberships are paid separately and directly to the RCHS Secretary or to ISA.

The annual RCHS subscripton is US dollars 10 for one year or 30 for 4 years. For students or non OECD residents who can not afford to pay the full rate it is US dollars 5 per year or 15 for 4 years. Pay the membership fee to:

Transportation
There are three aviation companies serving Umeå. SAS and Norwegian operate from Arlanda Airport in Stockholm and Malmö Aviation from Bromma Airport (near Stockholm city centre). There are many departures every days and early bookings can get you a good price. Umeå Airport is situated only 3 km from the town centre and there are airport buses for the University and the town centre after each arrival. You can also reach Umeå by train or by bus. There are daily departures from Stockholm.

Accomodation
A number of hotels can be booked via the on-line registration form. The hotels used by this conference are all situated in town centre. Information about budget accommodation can be found on the registration form.

Audio-visual facilities
All lecture halls will be equipped with overhead projectors and PC projectors.

Badges
The participant's name badge will be provided at the registration desk in the Arts Building. All participants are kindly requested to wear the badge throughout the conference. Only badge holders will be admitted to the Reception and the sessions.

Book exhibition
In the University Library there will be a small book exhibition in relation to the conference theme.

Business Hours and Shopping
Shops are generally open 10:00-18:00 on weekdays and 10:00-16:00 on Saturdays. Shops in the city centre have extended opening hours, some even on Sundays 12:00-16:00.

Collective Book Display
Outside the auditoriums there will be a collective book display, to which all participants are encouraged to bring a copy or two of recent publications.

Credit Cards
Commonly accepted cards in hotels, restaurants, shops, and at the registration desk are American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, Visa and MasterCard.

Currency
The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona, SEK. The approximate exchange currency in Sept 2007 was: SEK 100 = € 10.86 or USD 15.44. For update exchange rate, visit Forex.

Internet access

Each participant will be provided an individual temporary netlogon account at the registration, making it possible to get access to internet on the Campus either via wireless laptops or the stationary computers in the University Library. Click here to reach the netlogon-page.

Language
The official conference language is English.

Letter of Invitation
The conference Secretariat will be pleased to provide Letters of Invitation to any individual making such a request. A Letter of Invitation often facilitates the procedure of obtaining a visa. Please note that the Letter is not a commitment on the part of the conference to provide financial support.

Local transports
There are plenty of local buses going between the University Campus and the town centre (an average of six per hour during weekdays and five during weekends), which cost 20 SEK for a single fare; look for buses 1, 5, 8 and 69 which passes ”Universum” (”the Universe”, in Swedish), one of the main buildings at the Campus. Luggage
At the venue there will be a locked room where the delegates can store their luggage on the days of arrival and departure (Thursday-Sunday).

Papers
Papers should not be send in beforehand. Instead authors are encouraged to bring a chosen number of copies to share to interested colleagues.

Time Zone
Sweden is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) during the Summer.

University Library

The University Library offers rich facilities for the conference participants. Besides the special book exhibition on the conference theme, there are many stationary computers available. The Library will be open during all conference days (Thursday-Friday 08:00-18:00, Saturday 09:00-17:00, Sunday 12:00-16:00). They will also arrange two short guided tours for the conference participants, one on Thursday 14:00 and another on Friday 12:30 (no pre-registration is needed).

Visa
Participants who need a visa for entry to Sweden are strongly advised to apply in their home country well in advance. If in doubt, information can be obtained from your nearest Swedish Embassy or Consulate or from your travel agency.

Weather conditions
The weather in Umeå at this time of year, i.e. at the end of Swedish Summer, is often nice and relatively warm (with an average daytime temperature between 15-20°C). We recommend you to bring a warm jacket and comfortable shoes if you plan to attend the conference dinner by the Baltic sea or the Post-Conference tour to Norrbyskär.
