In October 8-10 2008 the conference Human Dimensions in the Circumpolar Arctic: An Interdisciplinary Conference under the Auspices of the International Polar Year will take place at Umeå University, Sweden. As national organizers of the conference, we regard this as an excellent opportunity to focus on the human dimensions on the Arctic region which have usually been neglected during previous Polar Years. The conference will thus pay particular attention to human life and conditions in the circumpolar Arctic in the past, present and future.

The conference will be held at Umeå University campus. Founded in 1965 as Sweden’s fifth university, Umeå University is located in the northern part of the country with a strong commitment to regional, international and interdisciplinary research. Today the university has 29 000 students and is an important vehicle for the cultural and economic development of the Umeå area and the entire region of northern Sweden. Umeå is conveniently accessible by air, and the university campus is located close to the town centre with hotels and other facilities close at hand.
