International conference, November 12-14, 2008 in Umeå Sweden.
We are pleased to invite you to Political Women 1500 –
1900, an international conference to be held at Umeå
University, Sweden, on November 12 – 14, 2008. The conference aims
to identify, initiate and promote research on politically active women
prior to the breakthrough of political democracy. Identifying previous
or ongoing research is essential for formulating new questions, developing
new methods, utilizing new sources, applying new theories and making
comparisons. It is also hoped that the conference will create an interest
in this research area among scholars working in fields in which the
political participation of women has not been studied closely. Another
important aim is to give scholars an opportunity to share experiences
and give constructive comments on each other’s papers. Gender excellence
at Umeå University
The Humanities and Social Sciences faculties at Umeå University
have a long-standing tradition of gender studies. Our university is
also host to one of the three Centers of Gender Excellence in Sweden.
In recent years, history as a discipline has been successful in receiving
awards for excellence and historians play important roles in three
of Umeå University’s Centers of Research Excellence. In 2007
the Department of Historical Studies received an award for excellence
in higher education given by the Swedish National Agency for Higher
Education.
